The locomotive D12E model is a 4-axle engine with diesel-electric DC/DC power transmission, designed for haulage in demanding tropical climatic conditions (e.g. Vietnam State Railways). The locomotive is provided with a hood and running board (protected by railing) and a driver`s cab, positioned on the front end of the locomotive. The auxiliary drives are mechanically propelled. The locomotive is equipped with a classical air-pressure brake (both train brake and locomotive brake).

The D12E-846 is the designation of the last design modification, comprising numerous enhancements reflecting the customer requirements.
